Wind Energy In China

 “China has the potential to become one the world’s most important wind energy market.” said Global Wind Energy Council President, Arthouros Zervos.
In 2003, driven by concerns for pollution and climate control, the Chinese government announced that its plan was for China to generate 12% of its energy from renewable sources such as wind by 2020.

According to the China Meteorology Research Institute, the exploitable land- estimated to have reached 700 MWs.  The table to the right, from the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, outlines current wind energy production in China.

The National Development and Reform Commission (“NDRC”) in China announced plans to establish up to 20 concession wind farms, each of about 100 MWs of capacity before 2010.  A condition of these concessions is that part of the project’s hardware must be manufactured locally. Overall, the NDRC anticipates that a total of 500,000 MWs of new generating capacity will be installed by 2020 to cope with the growing demand. About 121,000 MWs is expected to be renewable, representing about 12% of total generating capacity.

The market for wind energy in China grew by 35% in 2004 and in 2005, the country added 500 MWs of new wind power capacity.  

In 2006 analysts report China plans to start construction of an offshore wind power complex designed to have a generating capacity of 1 gigawatt when completed in 2020.

based resource in China has the potential for a power generation capacity of 253 GWs, whilst the ocean-based resource could produce 750 GWs.  By the end of 2004, the total grid-connected installed capacity of wind power in China was
